Small tangent but my favourite band name ever still has to be Biff Hitler and the Violent Mood Swings.

Double standards.

Re: Adolf!
The thing is that we should forget their forenames, which were their birth names, and instead consider why they changed their surnames to Hitler and Stalin.

Rather as Trumpf became Trump and David Koresh was originally Vernon Howell it is the change that intrigues.

Re: Adolf!
Hitler didn't change his surname (although some of his recent ancestors were too illiterate to spell it consistently). His dad was illegitimate, but was legitimised by Herr Hiedler, who is quite likely to have been the biological father of Adolf's dad, or roughly equally likely to have been the father's brother.

The historical irony of Hitler having a Jewish grandfather called Frankenburger is seriously damaged by the fact that this rich employer of Hitler's Grandmother didn't actually exist.

But it remains a fact that Hitler could not have joined the SS, as he would totally unable to prove "Aryan" ancestry back a couple of hundred years.

Stalin was involved in illegal political activity under a system where most political activity was illegal. He was a dodgy character, to say the least, but having a nom de guerre is not the grounds for coming to that conclusion.
